My Funny Valentines

The “Month of Love” is all too short in my opinion. March comes way too soon after the month of Valentine’s Day. But I can’t complain, as my February was filled with all kinds of love, especially from my nannying charges. As previously stated I am a big celebrator of Valentine’s Day, and bring love-themed treats to all my nannying homes, this year, in the form of cookies, candies, and Valentine-y books.
My book gift choices this year were Pigs in Love, which I discovered through Sassafras, and Love Monster, one I found while book-browsing. Pigs in Love is a poetic picture book, with Rainbow Fishish illustrations, that follows pigs as they express their Valentine’s Day love, to friends, to family, to that special someone. Such a fun read, and super cute, plus I love that it affirms that romantic love is not the only kind. Doc, Rebel, Boss Lady, Mr. Nice Guy, and El Fuego were all happy recipients of this one.
For Sassy, I brought Love Monster, the story of a little “funny-looking” monster who leaves his land of “cute” in search of someone who will love him, just the way he is. His trip is unsuccessful, and giving up, he boards a bus back to his fate in a land too cute for him, and it is then that he meets a lil lady monster, his love match. This surprise ending is heart-warming and teaches the lesson of knowing that the right person will love you just as you are, and the idea that love finds you, often when you are not looking for it.
On the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, Doc, Rebel, and I worked on handmade valentines. We used stamps, markers, stickers, and talked about the meaning behind X’s and O’s, hearts and flowers, chocolates, etc. Here are some of Mrs. Cheryl’s efforts:

This one, which was supposed to be a tree of hearts, got a lot of laughs from the kiddos as they said it looked like, “A bunch of booties,” and “lots of poop.”
The boys’ valentines were creative and thoughtful as was the card from their mama. From Sassafrass I received a hand-printed valentine, and sweet note from her parents. El Fuego sent me a card in the mail, complete with large heart confetti. My days were filled with Valentine offerings, big hugs from Boss Lady, snuggles from Mr. Nice Guy, kisses and stickers from Rebel, and the gift of love and friendship bestowed upon me by the families I nanny for, especially from the kiddos, my funny valentines.
